New management has taken over Southern Pools more than three decades after it was founded by its original owners.

Derrick and Suzanne Todd, as of Monday, became new owners of Southern Pools at 1421 West Wade Hampton Blvd. The Todds have been in the pool service business since 2008 with their Aquanut Pool Care, their family-owned commercial and residential business.

Freddy and Betty Couch decided to close their store and enjoy their retiring years after building a long and trusting ownership with their customers. The Couches will help with the transition by working with the Todds the next two months.

Karen Cassey walked into the shop happy to continue the service and business relationship. “I heard they (Couches) were going to close and almost had a heart attack,” she said.

The small business and local ownership appeals to Cassey. “I would much rather give my money to small business,” Cassey said. “I can walk in here and have my pool water tested for free and I don’t have to worry about the amount of chemicals I need.”

“Derrick and I try hard to keep the relationship with the customers,” Suzanne Todd said. “Freddy and Betty have been here 32 years and their customer base is well established.”

Derrick said the expansion to retail allows him to have a storefront where he can expand to winter products – spas, fire pits and grills. “We want to capture more spring and fall business and add winter,” Derrick said.

Derrick said the extra inventory will give access to more products and provide additional service. He will not add building above or below ground pools to his business. “There are other people that do and I can refer my customers to them.” Derrick said.

Spring hours are daily 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Call the store at 864-877-4748 for more information.
