Two people were killed and another person critically injured in a fiery single car crash on Hammett Bridge Road at about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle, Andrew Chase Jackson, 16, of 407 Hammett Bridge Road, was killed, coroner B. Parks Evans reported.

One passenger died on the way to the hospital and a third person reportedly has severe injuries and is badly burned. He was flown to the Augusta (Ga.) Burn Center. They have not been identified.

Greer Fire Chief Chris Harvey reported he didn’t know how the wreck happened other than the vehicle apparently drove off the road and crashed into the tree where it caught fire. Lt. Jim Holcombe of the Greer Police Department said it appeared high speed contributed to the wreck.

Toxicology tests will be conducted to see if any other factors contributed to the wreck, Holcombe said.

Jackson and one passenger were found outside the car, Holcombe said. He said all three were wearing seatbelts and it was not determined how two of the men were out of the vehicle.

Two bodies were burned beyond recognition, according to Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans.

“It’s very sad. You don’t want it to be your child, but you also don’t want it to be any body else’s,” said Jodi Tapp, who works at Riverside and Eastside high schools.

The investigation is ongoing.
