The X5 Sports Activity Vehicles produced at Greer’s BMW Manufacturing Co., set a new sales record in 2015 and helped pace the BMW brand to a new annual sales record.
There were 54,997 X5s sold last year, nearly 17 percent more than 2014.
Sales of BMW brand vehicles, despite being down in December, grew 1.8 percent in 2015 on sales of 346,023 vehicles compared to 339,738 in 2014.
December sales totaled 34,625 compared to 41,526 vehicles sold in December 2014.
“The new sales record in 2015 is the third record year in a row for BMW with the numbers further emphasizing the growth of luxury trucks, which are now one-third of BMW sales in the U.S.” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America.
“I fully expect our Sports Activity Vehicles to be the key driver of growth in the new year with both demand and availability increasing,” Willisch said
Willisch said 40 percent of the BMW sales in 2016 in the U.S. will be crossovers. BMW currently sells the X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6, He said the X7, to be produced in Greer, is scheduled for the showroom in 2018. “In a couple of years when we have the X7, it will be even higher.”
BMW is scheduled to produce 450,000 vehicles in Greer when the new expansion is completed.
