Skyland Elementary School has been awarded a 2017 National Blue Ribbon Award.
Skyland was among 342 schools nationwide honored as a Blue Ribbon school. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap.

Three Upstate students, one from Greer, are among 30 in the country awarded full high school scholarships to Gifted Learners.
Samuel Qin, from Greer, is the recipient of the Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship, a four-year high school scholarship for gifted learners to attend an optimally matched high school program to help them meet their unique intellectual and personal needs.
North Greenville University mass communication professor Dr. Rick Sparks is leveraging his skills as a pianist/composer and his experience as a broadcaster into daily airplay on SiriusXM satellite radio.
Sparks’ new piano album, “Nightfall London,” charted in the top-10 this summer on Zone Music Reporter’s world radio airplay chart. The album is Sparks’ third instrumental album since 2014, and is being played on broadcast and online radio stations around the world, including the “Spa” channel on SiriusXM.

The Thursday Afternoon Acting Group (TAAG) at the University of South Carolina Upstate is hosting an after school theatre program on Thursdays, 4-6 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. The first class is Thursday.
Registration is for students ages eight to 18. The cost is $75 for the semester-long program.
The University of South Carolina Upstate maintained its rankings as No. 2 Top Public Regional Colleges in the South and No. 4 for Best College in the South for Veterans, according to the U.S. News and World Report.
USC Upstate is tied for No. 11 in Ethnic and Racial Diversity among Regional Colleges in the South.
Dr. Clif Flynn has been promoted to provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
“For nearly three decades, Dr. Flynn has demonstrated servant leadership and gained respect at USC Upstate, across the state and throughout the country,” said Dr. Brendan B. Kelly, chancellor of USC Upstate. “Dr. Flynn is the chief academic officer of this institution and he offers precisely the strong leadership skills that academic affairs needs to innovate and move forward.”
All Greenville and Spartanburg public schools have cancelled school and all its activities Monday due to the statewide forecast associated with Hurricane Irma. All district offices will also be closed.
USC Upstate has announced it cancelled classes Monday, while Spartanburg Methodist College and Converse College reported it is still monitoring Hurricane Irma’s movement and forecast.
