The Greer Children's Theater is preparing for its adaptation of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's "Mary Poppins" while casting and rehearsals for the children's theater's rendition of Disney's "Lion King Jr." are set for November.
"Mary Poppins" performances at the J. Harley Bonds Career Center are Nov. 6-8 and 13-15. Friday and Saturday shows are 7 p.m. and Sunday shows at 2 p.m.
Auditions will be held Sunday, Oct. 11 for the Best Singer in the State competition at the Greenville Hilton.
Youth and adult divisions will be held this year. The contest began in 2011 as a school district competition featuring students through high school.
Survivors of the primate barn fire that happened in the early morning hours of Jan. 9 were brought out to the media Thursday. And a plea for more contributions was sounded with admissions declining and the park’s shortfall at $150,000 and counting, according to park officials.
“It’s taken us these months to really assess the impact of the fire beyond the structure that was damaged,” Kim Atchley, executive director, said. “It’s been a really tough year. People have called every day to see if we’re open.
Trade Street will be closed Saturday between Victoria Street and Randall Street from 6 a.m. – noon. The Greer Station Diner is hosting a classic car show.
Next Saturday, Oktoberfest, will cause Trade Street to be closed all day and into the night.

Benton Blount was eliminated in the final round of “America’s Got Talent” Wednesday night. The finals were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Paul Zerdin, ventriloquist, is this year's winner. He won the $1 million and performance in Las Vegas that went with the win.
Blount, who lives in Greenville, was the only solo singer in the 10-act finals. The stay at home dad, Blount sang a duet with Rachel Platten, “Fight Song”, during the finale.

This is the 10th anniversary of the show and the winner will be announced on Wednesday night.
Joshua Waldun has been hired by Hollywild Animal Park to serve as Education/Outreach Coordinator.
Waldun will expand the non-profit animal park’s connection to area schools and community centers. A grant from the Spartanburg County Foundation made the expansion possible.
Abbott’s frozen custard and the Blue Ridge Brewing Company are both scheduled to open in the final quarter this year at opposite ends in downtown Greer.
