Scores of young, high-stepping talented dancers came to Greer Friday night to show judges they knew they could dance. They also raised more than $5,000 for Relay for Life of Greer.
Judges were presented a dilemma to whittle the strong field of 53 teams to the final five and from there to the champion of the inaugural “So You Think You Can Dance Greer” show and competition at Greer High School.
Ashley Chapman, Marissa Gaffney and Sarah Rogers performed to “Undone”, representing A Step Above Dance Academy, to earn the championship and a performance on “Your Carolina”.
Other finalists in the dance-off, based on highest overall scores, were:
• Bethany Smith (Dance Dynamics) performed to “Sharp Dressed Man”.
• Kaja Downs and Paige Hollister (DVC), danced to “Safe and Sound”.
• Maggie Black, Kehler Bryant, Paige Hollister, Kourtney Jeffers, Taylor Schaffer and Jessica Stephens (DVC) danced to “Shelter”.
• Clancy Coley, Ada Kelley, Gracy Roberts, Bethany Smith, Nora Contreras, Aliyha Mullins, Julie Taft, Lindy Wicklund (Dance Dynamics) danced to “Get Happy”.
Felicia Abbott, owner/instructor of DanceVisions, coordinated the production. It all came about as a fundraiser for Greer’s Relay for Life when Abbott, a cancer survivor, was approached to become a team captain. She created the DVC dance team.
Judges were Miss Greater Greer Lia Holman, Miss Chesnee Erin Frost and Miss Upstate International Holly Woodrum.
A salute to the cancer survivors in the audience and a tribute to those that the dancers and their families had lost started the production. DanceVisions sold luminaries, food, snacks and ribbons and held a silent auction in honor of Relay for Life.
Greer Relay for Life is Friday, May 16 at Greer High School 6 p.m. until midnight. The theme is “Hope Under the Big Top”.
