PICKENS (4-3, 3-1) at GREER (5-2, 3-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: Greer dominated Berea, as expected, winning 67-0. Quez Nesbitt (115 yards rushing, 3 TDs), Josh Gentry 6 for 11 completions, 89 yards 1 TD pass and 1 TD run, D’Anta Fleming TD reception) had their workmanlike performances. For Greer it was a good opportunity to give DeAndre Moren some work at QB and he didn’t disappoint with two scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  Pickens lost its first Region II-3A game to Greenville, 21-14. Pickens is new to the Peach Blossom Conference, what is considered the Greenville County conference.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

“It’s going to be pretty much smash mouth football. We’re going to get after it.”

Erie Williams, Greer secondary coach

THE RUNDOWN:

Greer’s offense appears to be working near 100 percent efficiency. Quez Nesbitt, given a crease, will dazzle with his footwork and has yet to be caught from behind, reeling off three 90-plus yards TD runs. Quarterback Josh Gentry has improved his passing, is a threat running the ball and his game management may be the biggest improvement sine the beginning of the season. D’Anta Fleming has shown he can be the game-breaker coaches have been expecting. The Yellow Jackets defense, with John Hicks anchoring the linebackers, is solid and the secondary with Fleming, Malek Johnson provide experience. Tay Woods has played virtually everywhere on defense and has proved to be a menace. Pickens won four straight until Greenville handed the Blue Flame a loss last week.

SOUTHSIDE (4-3, 3-1) at BLUE RIDGE (7-0, 4-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: Blue Ridge continued to steamroll through Region II-3A opponents with a 57-0 victory over Travelers Rest. Southside improved to 3-1 in conference play with its second straight victory and third in its last four, a 28-16 win over Eastside.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

“We’re not getting cocky, but we’re preparing and we’re going to be ready as a team.”
Blue Ridge senior defensive back Corey Dogan on the Tigers’ 7-0 start.

“(Southside) is going to be very athletic and they’ve got some big guys up front. Coach Prince has done a great job improving that team this season.” Blue Ridge assistant coach Travis Henson.

THE RUNDOWN:

This is homecoming week for Blue Ridge as the Tigers welcome the Southside Tigers. Southside is much improved this season under head coach Julian Prince and sits in a four-way tie with Greer, Greenville and Pickens behind Blue Ridge in the conference standings. Freshman quarterback Juwan Prince, son of head coach Julian, has made an impact along with freshman wide receiver Shawn Chandler and sophomore running back Lutrell Dallas on offense. Blue Ridge recorded its first shutout of the season this past week, while the offense eclipsed the 50-point barrier for the fourth time this year. Sophomore quarterback Ty Montgomery leads an opportunistic and balanced offense. Montgomery has accounted for 24 touchdowns this season and is closing in on 2,000 yards from scrimmage this season.

RIVERSIDE (1-6, 0-3) at MAULDIN (3-4, 1-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: The Warriors are coming off a 64-0 drumming by top-ranked Byrnes, while Mauldin was beaten by Gaffney, 40-7.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

“We may not have the talent that other teams we play have right now, but we’re not quitters either.”
Riverside head coach Steve Eoute.

THE RUNDOWN

The Warriors faced their toughest test a week ago in top-ranked Byrnes, but feel to be on a more even playing field this week at Mauldin. The Mavericks can be explosive as indicated by a 64-37 region win over Wade Hampton earlier this season. Quarterback Dre Massey keys the Mauldin offense.
