Laci Olson, the reigning Miss Greater for two more days, was coaching some of the dancers how to prevent from sliding on a slick stage.
“One of the girls put hairspray on her tap shoes to help make them sticky,” Olson said. She also said using duct tape is an alternative. “You put duct tape on the bottom of the shoes and then slice little strips to help with the grip.”
One remedy is putting resin on the shoes.
And then there’s the ultimate alternative suggested by a mom of a dancer. “There are portable floors that can be used and I’m going to try to locate one and ask if we can use it here.”
Sydney Sill, 2011 Miss Greater Lyman Teen and in the Top 5 in Miss South Carolina Teen, ironically finished first runnerup at the Miss Byrnes High School pageant last year.
A 5-hour rehearsal was held tonight with the Miss and Teen candidates going through each phase of their competition, the opening number and practicing their introductions.
Choreographer Christina Loftis, 2004 Miss Greater Greer, went through repetitive routines to get the timing perfected and the girls on the marks. Each run-through was improved and Loftis dismissed the girls when she acknowledged their success.
Girls took advantage of Loftis’ experience in dance and choreography with some individual instruction after rehearsals.
Dixie Waldrop, Mistress of Ceremonies, gave the girls a run-through with what to expect during the final phase of the pageant. Each contestant was given a question to answere as they were announced for the final time.
The opening number will be performed to "Blow" by Kesha. Laci Olson, Miss Greater Greer, and Abby Riggs, Miss Teen, will also take part of the opening. Olson and Riggs will provide entertainment in separate dance numbers.
