'Hairspray, The Musical' auditions for Greenville Little Theatre scheduled

The Greenville Little Theatre (GLT) is holding open auditions for “Hairspray the Musical” Sunday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. 

Roles are available for 6 – 8 African-American women, 8 – 10 white women, 4 – 6 African-American men, 7 – 9 white men, and a young African-American girl (age 12 to 15). Adult ages range from 16 to 65. 

Be prepared to sing a verse of a song (bring your sheet music). There will be a short dance routine, as well (bring shoes you can move in). 

Auditions will be held in Magill Rehearsal Hall at the rear of the building. “Hairspray” will be directed by GLT Producing Director Suzanne McCalla. Tim St. Clair II will serve as Musical Director and Kimberlee Ferreira will choreograph.

Rehearsals will begin March 27.  Performances run June 2 - 25. 

“Hairspray” is a great show for young singer/dancers, and many important roles for African-American performers. 

Character breakdowns:

Tracy Turnblad - The unsuspecting protagonist, she is large and in charge. A romantic with a good heart.

Gender: Female

Age: 15 to 20

Vocal range: G3 - G5

Corny Collins - The charismatic host of The Corny Collins' Show. Good looking and smooth talking, he is a genuinely nice guy.

Gender: Male

Age: 25 to 35

Vocal range: D3 - A4

Penny Pingleton - Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Bursting to get free of her mother's dominating control.

Gender: Female

Age: 15 to 20

Vocal range: A3 - G5

Velma Von Tussle - Amber's mother. She is a devious taskmaster and snobby racist.

Gender: Female

Age: 45 to 50

Vocal range: G3- E5

Amber Von Tussle - Tracy's nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Always needs to be the center of attention.

Gender: Female

Age: 15 to 20

Vocal range: A3 - F5

Link Larkin - The star heartthrob on The Corny Collins' Show. He is extremely attractive and talented.

Gender: Male

Age: 15 to 20

Vocal range: G3 - A5

Seaweed J. Stubbs - Tracy's classmate and friend. He is cocky but lovable. Talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny.

Gender: Male

Age: 15 to 20

Vocal range: F3 - D5

Little Inez - Seaweed’s sister and Motormouth Maybelle’s daughter. She is small in stature, but has big dreams.

Gender: Female

Age: 12-15

Vocal range: C4 - E5

Motormouth Maybelle - Big, blonde, beautiful and proud of it. She is sassy and confident.

Gender: Female

Age: 40 to 50

Vocal range: F3 - E5

The Dynamites  (Judine, Kamilah, and Shayna) - Talented vocal trio a la The Supremes. Featured in many numbers in tight harmony. May double for other ensemble roles.

Wilbur Turnblad - Tracy's simple-minded and kind father. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter.

Gender: Male

Age: 45 to 50

Vocal range: A3 - A5

Corny Collins' Kids (Tammy, Brad, Fender, Brenda, Sketch, Shelley, IQ, and Lou Ann) - Dancers and singers on The Corny Collins Show.

Prudy Pingleton - Penny's strict mother. Very conservative, controlling, and closed minded.

Gender: Female

Age: 40 to 50

Vocal range: D4 - B4

Record Shop Kids (Gilbert, Duane, Lorraine, Stooie, Thad) - Singing and dancing kids in Motormouth Maybelle's record shop.

Harriman F. Spritzer - President of Ultra Clutch cosmetics

Owner of a plus?sized dress shop

Gym Teacher

Prison Matron
