Blue Ridge sophomore quarterback Ty Montgomery had turned in a prolific offensive season despite precious little varsity experience.

The Greer defense planned all week to key on the Tigers’ trigger man and the pressure from the Yellow Jackets’ front line played a major role in Greer’s 35-7 victory tonight.

“We had a hard time protecting the quarterback – they did a great job getting pressure on the quarterback,” said Blue Ridge Head Coach Wade Cooper. “We couldn’t mount a running game much at all. We just didn’t play well on either side of the ball.”

The Yellow Jackets sacked Montgomery four times for minus-26 yards and tackled Montgomery and wildcat quarterback Brennen Griffin twice behind the line of scrimmage for minus-8 yards.

“We came in and had a strong game plan and we executed well,” said Greer senior defensive lineman Tim Ballenger. “We got pressure on Montgomery early.”

Montgomery started out strong, completing 3 of 4 passes for 36 yards and rushing for 6 yards on the game’s opening drive.

But that drive stalled at the Greer 40-yard-line and Greer held Blue Ridge without another first down until midway through the second quarter, three possessions later.

Montgomery, who is completing more than 60 percent of his passes, was held to 11 of 25 passing for 92 yards and an interception. He failed to complete a touchdown pass for the first time this season.

Greer Defensive Coordinator Travis Perry praised his defensive unit.

“It was huge, getting to him, not giving him time to stand back there and find the weapons he has,” Perry said. “He has four very talented wide receivers and we felt like we needed to get pressure on him and move him around in the pocket, and we were able to do that.”
