A Riverside High School cross-country and track coach was under investigation for sexual assault when he died Tuesday night, according to a Greer Police Department report.
Eric Jay Cummings, 46, also a teacher at the high school, was found dead at his Lyman home, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said. No cause of death was announced.
The victim reported the sexual assault Monday at the Greer Police Department. She reported Cummings sexually assaulted her in 2016 when she was 16-years-old, according to the Greer Police report. The victim, now 20, claimed she was a junior when the incident occurred at the high school, 794 Hammett Bridge Road. Cumming was her coach.
Cummings had been put on paid administrative leave Sept. 3, according to a Greenville County Schools (GCS) spokesman. No reason was given for Cummings being placed on leave since it was a personnel matter, according to the spokesman.
According to Upstate media reports, the mother of an underage girl reported that Cummings sexually assaulted her daughter this year at Riverside High School.
