"Greer Goes Global" is an international festival at City Park on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
"Greer Goes Global" will held indoors on the second floor at Greer City Hall Saturday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. The festival is free and food vendors wil be selling food and beverages.
"The weather forecast seems fairly certain that it will be wet on Saturday. For the safety and comfort of all we thought it was best to make this decision early," said Ann Cunningham, director of the City of Greer Parks and Recreation Department. "If there are breaks in the weather we can have some of the sports demonstrations in Greer City Park, but the events halls will provide a nice dry location for both presenters and guests."
International Festival features 'Greer Goes Global' at City Park
A small grant was just enough for the Parks and Recreation Department to stretch the wealth around the world.
“Greer Goes Global”, an inaugural international event, takes place at the pristine City Park and adjoining city hall Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s as much an educational event,” Ann Cunningham told city council Tuesday. Admission is free. Download the schedule here.
The city’s international dynamics is spread through businesses and industries located in greater Greer and its core group of BMW Manufacturing, Mitsubishi Polyester Film, Pelham Medical Center and Greer Memorial hospitals who employ international staff that have transitioned their families to the Upstate.
A $5,000 grant was awarded Parks and Recreation by Hughes Investments and distributed by Ten at the Top. The International Center of the Upstate has designed March Upstate International Month.
Spread around the park will be 30 countries represented with youth-oriented information with colorful displays and cultural demonstrations. A certificate will be awarded to youth who visit a designated number of countries.
But be prepared to be lulled to stops along the way featuring dancing, music, crafts, sports demonstrations inviting participation and storytelling. And visitors may get more than a whiff of smells coming from food vendors representing different ethnic flavors.
“The festival is an opportunity to celebrate an educational and entertaining day,” Cunningham said.
What Cunningham didn’t mention was the festival schedule of events will prove to be a fitness and endurance test to attend all the entertaining options within 180 minutes.
The City of Greer’s fifth annual juried art exhibition themed “Greer Goes Global” will be on display at City Hall. An awards ceremony and reception is planned from 6-8 p.m.
