The payday for a Greer Idol winner will average $500 per performance.

Rain cancelled the past two Tunes in the Park and Idol performances, meaning winners will compete a maximum of three weeks – weather permitting. The summer entertainment series has only been held June 28, at the City’s Freedom Blast celebration.

Robin Byouk, director for Greer Idol and Tunes in the Park, announced five of the 11 singers in each group will be eliminated after Friday night’s semifinals competition leaving six to battle for the championship on July 26.

The beginning of the fall semesters and final week of vacations hindered the competition from being extended.

Idol Teen is at 6 and Idol is 8 p.m. Contestants will perform their music on Friday that was scheduled two weeks ago – 70’s and 80’s Rock. The Holiday Band, from Burlington, N.C., will play at Tunes in the Park at 7 and 9 p.m.

All voting will take place next week at the amphitheater and the winners will be announced at the end of the evening.

The Idol winner gets $1,500 and Idol Teen $500.

A late thunderstorm with a deluge of rain, accompanied with lightning, cancelled last week’s performance just as Idol was ready to begin. The Out-of-Towners band had already set up its equipment and sound.

The forecast for Friday is hot and humid, high temperature in the 90s with a heat index over 100. Forecasts differ with the possibility of rain. One agency forecasts partly cloudy skies throughout Friday evening and another suggests a night thunderstorm may occur in spots.

The Encore Band will close out the series on July 26.
