It was homecoming for the No. 8 ranked Class AAAA Yellow Jackets and Travelers Rest was the perfect guest. Greer High School classes of 1961 and 1964 were honored.
It was both teams’ Region II opening game.
Greer accumulated 512 total yards and TR had 304 yards.
Houston, a sophomore, had a rare Greer passing attack accounting for a career-high 326 yards. Houston recorded 254 of those yards on 25 completions on 33 attempts. He was not intercepted.
Williams averaged 15.3 yards gaining 122 yards on eight carries. He scored on a 67-yard run in the first quarter to help Greer build a 14-0 lead and his fourth quarter score was Greer’s final TD on a 4-yard run.
Houston’s TD passes went to Quay White for 10 yards in the first quarter, 18-yard scoring pass to Cameron Kelly in the second quarter, a 37-yard scoring strike to Richie Sadler, in the third period and his final TD pass, a 10-yarder, to Alex Syphertt that gave the Yellow Jackets a 48-21 lead.
White also added a 15-yard TD run and backup quarterback Matthew Huff scored on a 5-yard run.
Huff was perfect completing all eight of his passes for 72 yards.
Travelers Rest scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters.
There were a total of 23 penalties in the game with Greer assessed 128 yards.
Greer travels to Eastside, 3-3, 0-1, next Friday. Union County beat Eastside, 34-15, Friday night.
