National Night Out at City Park preparing for Pokémon Go players
National Night Out will be celebrated Tuesday Aug. 2 at Greer City Park.

The free event allows neighbors and police officers to get to know each other better in an effort to improve safety.

Activities are planned outdoors from 6-8 p.m. and will move indoors to the Cannon Centre in the event of rain.

“There has never been a more important time to celebrate with a full community gathering for National Night Out,” said Sgt. Chad Richardson of the Greer Police Department. “Police officers traditionally visit different neighborhoods each year for National Night Out. We're going to let people know that we are all neighbors in the City of Greer and that we value the opportunity to join together for fun and fellowship.”

The city will also be placing lures at selected PokéStops in the park to draw new Pokémon Go players to those locations and giving players up to 30 minutes to add to their collections.

Pokémon players will receive lighted reflectors to keep players safe after the sun goes down.

Representatives from city departments and Greer Commission of Public Works will greet visitors to the park. The GPD SWAT truck and meth abatement trailer will be on display, along with representatives from Operation ID, the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and Neighborhood Watch.

Officers from each of the city's four patrol areas will be present, giving the public an opportunity to meet the officers who patrol their neighborhoods.

Activities for children will include bounce houses, face painting, corn hole and other games led by police officers. Light refreshments will be available.
