Blue Ridge has rematch with North Augusta in District baseball playoffs

Blue Ridge High School's baseball team beat Daniel, 3-2, Saturday to remain alive in the Class AAAA playoffs. The past three games the Blue Ridge pitchers have only allowed six hits.

Blue Ridge travels to North Augusta twice Monday and must win both games to remain in the playoffs.

CPW cuts daily boat permit fees on Lake Robinson

Boat fees have been reduced to $5 a day on Lake Robinson for motorized (10 horsepower maximum) and non-motorized boats.
 

Daily boat permits for Greer residents on Lake Robinson just got a lot cheaper.

Greer Commission of Public Works commissioners unanimously approved a recommendation from CPW staff to reduce daily residential boat permit fees to $5, effective immediately. That’s a 75 percent decrease from the $20 fee set in August 2013.

House members debated then turned back a proposal to eventually require seat belts on all new school busses in SC. There was concern about the cost ($6,500 per bus) and the potential new requirements for drivers to be responsible for each student during an accident. The bill was referred back to committee.

Blood drive held today at Greer CPW in memory of fallen Spartanburg police officer

A blood drive in memory of fallen Spartanburg police officer Jason Harris is scheduled at Greer CPW today at 12:30-5:30 p.m.

Harris served the city of Spartanburg for 12 years. He died following an on-duty motorcycle crash on April 13. He is survived by a wife and three children.

Randall Street first up for infrastructure replacement in May

Randall Street will be the first downtown street to undergo water and sewer line replacement beginning in the latter part of May.

Greer CPW Commissioners approved $380,535 to Dillard Excavating Co. Inc. for the first phase of the estimated $4 – $4.5 million project to replace the central business district’s aging infrastructure and incorporate a new streetscape appearance. Some of the downtown infrastructure is more than 100-years old, city officials said.

An apparent head-on collision between a Greenville County school bus and a pick-up truck sent four Greer students and the driver of the truck to a hospital this morning.
 

An apparent head-on collision between a Greenville County school bus and a pick-up truck sent four Greer students and the driver of the truck to Pelham Medical Center this morning, according to police and Greenville County Schools officials.

Greer police reported no children were seriously injured and Beth Brotherton, spokesman for Greenville County Schools, said the injuries to the students were non life-threatening. "They were so minor one had a cut lip and the others had bumps and bruises," Brotherton said.

Greer HS Virtual Enterprise Class gets top finish in the country, Hannon and Henderson win Gold in Salesmanship

The Greer High School Virtual Enterprise team finished 28th in the competition at New York City.
 

The Greer High School Virtual Enterprise Class finished in a top group of 28 in the Business Plan Competition at the 2017 Virtual Enterprise Youth Business Summit in New York City.

Greer was among 400 schools from 16 states to compete at the competition.

Dr. Thomas McConnell's  “I Have Seen My Death”, was awarded first place for the non-fiction 2017 Porter Fleming Literary Competition.

After being diagnosed with an incurable blood cancer, Dr. Thomas McConnell drew from a remembered conversation with a research nurse and from his own dreams to write “I Have Seen My Death”, which was awarded first place for non-fiction at the 2017 Porter Fleming Literary Competition Sunday at the Morris Museum of Art.

McConnell is a professor of English at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Greer community partners raise wall for new Habitat home

Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County raised the walls on the 2017 Greer Community Partners Build home, celebrating a commitment to building affordable housing in the Greer community.

The home is being built for the Neriz family. As a Habitat program participant, homeowner Yadira Neriz will complete 20 hours of homeownership education classes. She will also complete 200 hours of “sweat equity,” building her home and the homes of other Habitat homeowners, alongside volunteers from the partner organizations. She will pay an affordable mortgage for the home.

SCDOT: Eastbound lane of Hwy. 80 going into Lyman will be closed

The eastbound lane of Highway 80 at Highway 290 going into Lyman will be closed Friday evening at 6 p.m. until Monday morning, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The 14-mile detour route, which will include Highway 101, I-85 and US 29, has signs in place to alert drivers, according to the SCDOT.
