Greer dismisses Berea in 51-0 victory

Matthew Huff threw three touchdown passes and Greer kind of skipped over Berea in a 51-0 victory Friday night in a Class 4A Region II high school football game at Dooley Field.

It was Greer’s first shutout this season for the Yellow Jackets and sets up a region championship game next Friday night at Eastside. Both teams are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the region. The Yellow Jackets have won seven consecutive games.

The Greer Yellow Jackets flexed their muscle Friday night with a 58-6 victory over Travelers Rest at Chico Boling Stadium.

It took Dre Williams 4 minutes, 14 seconds to score two touchdowns – 62 yard run and a 72-yard punt return – to outscore TR.

Greer dismantles Union County

Greer ended its non-region schedule Thursday night by defeating Union County, 42-7, at Dooley Field.  The game was played one night earlier because of the threat of Hurricane Florence bringing hefty winds and heavy rains.

Greer finished its non-region schedule with a 4-1 record. The Yellow Jackets have an open date Sept. 21 and begins region play at Greenville on Sept .28.

DUNCAN ­ – The Byrnes Rebels came back with the game’s final two touchdowns to overcome the Greer Yellow Jackets, 39-26, Friday night in both team’s high school football’s opening game.

Nijaw Crouch recovered a fumble by teammate Jaxon Youngblood and ran it 34 yards for a touchdown with 5:03 left in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 31-26 lead over Greer. Clayton Crile’s kick put Byrnes ahead 32-26.

Nominations for the Greer High School Hall of Fame are being accepted.

Athletes must have graduated at least five years before becoming eligible. Criteria are based on the athlete’s accomplishments at GHS. Include specific accomplishments as an athlete and post-season honors received such as all-region, all-state and bowl games such as the Shrine Bowl and North-South All-Star games.

100 deadliest days for teen drivers

More than 1,050 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver in 2016 during the 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That is an average of 10 people per day – a 14 percent increase compared to the rest of the year, according to data analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. 

As school lets out for summer, AAA  Carolinas stresses the importance of preparing and educating inexperienced teen drivers for some of the most dangerous driving days of the year.

South Pointe scored more points than any team against Greer in the Yellow Jackets’ long storied history Friday night at Dooley Field.

Greer marched into the third round of the Class AAAA football playoffs Friday night by knocking off South Aiken, 42-21, at Dooley Field.

Greer will play Greenville, a 42-27 winner over York, next Friday in the semifinal game of the Upper State bracket. The game will be played at Dooley Field and a packed stadium is all but guaranteed when the two rivals play. Greer beat Greenville, 27-19, in the regular season. Greer has a 10-game winning streak and is 11-1 overall.
