Williams gains 141 yards, 2 TDs to power No. 6 Greer past Westside

Greer flipped Westside in the season’s opening high school football game Friday night at Westside.

Dre Williams rushed for 141 yards and scored twice to lead Greer. His 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter with just under four minutes played, shocked Westside. Trey Houston’s 38-yard scoring strike to Cameron Martin four minutes later, 7:08, gave Greer a 14-0 lead.

Students from area selected for Furman's Bridges to a Brighter Future

Twenty-six Greenville County high school students have been invited to participate in Bridges to a Brighter Future at Furman University, a program whose mission is to give students the tools and support they need to overcome barriers, graduate from high school and enroll in college. The new class marks the 21st year of the educational outreach program.

“Bridges students have already demonstrated both academic and leadership potential by their ninth grade year, yet they face financial barriers or personal circumstances that may prevent them from achieving what they are truly capable of,” said Carrie Silver, director of Bridges to a Brighter Future. “Here, students participate in life-changing experiences that help them discover who they are to build the self-confidence and resiliency they need to succeed in life.”

Greer, Blue Ridge seniors awarded $10,000 scholarships from CBL Foundation

CBL Charitable Foundation has awarded $10,000 higher education scholarships to three local students.

Greer High School seniors Candace Jensen and Victoria Schneider were both winners of the 2107 Robert F. Williams Scholarship, named for a past CBL Board Chairman and member of the South Carolina State Board of Education. Jensen will attend the University of Georgia, while Schneider will attend Clemson University.

GGEF awards 13 $1,000 scholarships to Greer area students

The Greater Greer Education Foundation awarded $13,000 in scholarships to 13 students from six high schools in the Greater Greer area Tuesday afternoon at Greer City Hall.

 Students were selected by the guidance department of each school and submitted to the Foundation. The Foundation in turn will present scholarship funds to the technical school or college on behalf of the student.

Saddler is state champ in triple jump to lead Greer in track championships

Greer High School junior Richie Saddler saved one of his best jumps for the right place and time as he won the Class AAAA State triple jump competition Saturday at Spring Valley High School. 

Saddler's leap of 45-feet 5-inches was almost a foot better than the second-place finisher. Saddler also took fourth place in the 400 meter run.

An apparent head-on collision between a Greenville County school bus and a pick-up truck sent four Greer students and the driver of the truck to a hospital this morning.
 

An apparent head-on collision between a Greenville County school bus and a pick-up truck sent four Greer students and the driver of the truck to Pelham Medical Center this morning, according to police and Greenville County Schools officials.

Greer police reported no children were seriously injured and Beth Brotherton, spokesman for Greenville County Schools, said the injuries to the students were non life-threatening. "They were so minor one had a cut lip and the others had bumps and bruises," Brotherton said.

The Greer High School Virtual Enterprise Class finished in a top group of 28 in the Business Plan Competition at the 2017 Virtual Enterprise Youth Business Summit in New York City.

Greer was among 400 schools from 16 states to compete at the competition.

Olivia Bennett, Haley Thackston, Hannah Hall and Kelly Wynn Cross have been awarded scholarships on the basis of their academic achievement, school, church, and community involvement. With satisfactory academic progress, the scholarships will guarantee the full cost of tuition, room and board for four years of attendance at NGU.
