Daily Bread Ministries is planning a four-unit homeless rehabilitation shelter to be located at 509-511 E. Poinsett Street, Adam Wickliffe, chairman of the board of directors for the ministry, announced in a letter today.
This is “an important next step that will fundamentally change the lives of the homeless in the Greer area,” Wickliffe stated in the letter. “For over 20 years, Daily Bread Ministries and the Christian community have provided one hot meal a day to those in need and ministered to the less fortunate in our community. Today, we’re taking the next step.”
Wickliffe said the ministry is anticipating closing on the E. Poinsett parcel of land on Aug. 1.
No cost was mentioned for the land or building the facility.
“The idea is to have the ministry build a three-unit, high efficiency and high security transitional apartment facility with a fourth unit for a full time mentor,” Wickliffe wrote. A courtyard in the middle will have a swing set, picnic table and garden.
People will be given shelter and counsel for a year while being mentored to return to the workforce and a home of their own.
Wickliffe stated participants would be required to eat and work at the soup kitchen and attend Bible study and counseling.
“This shelter will operate under certain guidelines and a program intended on equipping people to return to the workforce and a home of their own,” stated Wickliffe.
An informational meeting is scheduled Monday, June 2 at the Greer Soup Kitchen at 521 E. Poinsett St, Greer, at 6 p.m. to answer questions and show detailed information about the building plan, the counseling plan, volunteer opportunities and funding needs. The public is invited to attend.
