If you’ve heard the more straightforward work of Jake Garrett, aka John The Revelator, in his other band, Mason Jar Menagerie, this stuff’s going to come as a bit of surprise. Sounding like some sort of unholy cross between Jack White, Jon Spencer and mid-period Flaming Lips, JTR’s sound seems chaotic, but underneath the wailed vocals, filthy guitar and gutbucket beat is an artist fully in control. Joseph Huber’s music pulls from folk, country and bluegrass with equal skill, flashing from hoedown speed to heartbroken introspection from song to song.
