The Greer Police Department has donated proceeds from its annual softball tournament to the family of a slain Greenville police officer. Additionally, the Citizens Police Academy is funding two Greenville officers to the national convention this week.
The family of Greenville Police Officer Allen Jacobs, who was killed in the line of duty March 18, was presented a $6,000 check from Greer’s annual Upstate Law Enforcement Memorial Softball Tournament. “The funds are something we never want to give because of why they are raised,” Capt. Matt Hamby said. “We hope in some small way it will help the officer’s family. We’re honored to be in a position to do this.”
Students from Blue Ridge High School and Dorman High School are winners of the service project competition held at the Richard W. Riley Institute at Furman University.
Kehler Bryant of Blue Ridge won for her project, “Healthy Tips for Happy Kids”. Dorman’s Jeremiah Drummond’s project, “Picture a Family Together” also won in the institute’s Emerging Public Leaders (EPL) program.
Riverside High School student Faith Jeter was selected to receive the Carter G. Woodson Legacy Award sponsored by Berea College in Berea, KY.
This award recognizes a high school junior who has demonstrated outstanding character, academic achievement and leadership.

Bryant, Miss Anderson Teen last year, has made it personal promoting her anti-bullying platform the past two years making South Carolina a “No Bully Zone” and encouraging everyone to take the anti-bullying pledge, “I Won’t Stand By, I Will Stand up!”
Hale Edwards will be recognized at the PTSA State Conference as the PTSA State Teacher of the Year for Middle Schools.
