Greer Memorial entrance to get relief from swooshing winds

The walk-in entrance to Greer Memorial Hospital will be extended to the edge of the driveway under the canopy to rid visitors and staff of swooshing winds that filter into the hospital’s lobby.
The plan was in place before record single digit temperatures, at the beginning of the month, sent staff at the front desk scurrying for layers of clothing, winter coats and gloves.
Barre Fit classes begin Thursday at Dance Visions

Barre Fit classes begin at Dance Visions Thursday with the first class offered for free. It is the newest fitness craze that offers a fast and safe way to change the shape of bodies.
The exercises are a low impact workout that uses the ballet barre to tone, change and shape.
Warning: GHS asks children under 18 not to visit Children or Women's facilities

Greenville Health System is asking children under age 18 not visit its Children Hospital or Women’s Hospital facilities as a precaution against the spread of influenza.
That includes the two hospitals on the Greenville Memorial Medical Campus, as well as the Women’s Center on the Greer and Laurens medical campuses.
ER departments prepared for more patients as bitter cold bites Upstate

The extreme temperatures that will envelope the Upstate this week have hospital emergency departments on alert for an increase in the number of patients.
The overnight is low is forecast to be 8 degrees, which would break the record of 9 degrees set in 1904, according to the National Weather Service.
Extreme cold means extra clothing to stay warm

Bitter cold weather will be dropping temperatures into the single digits Monday and Tuesday nights.
Monday’s forecast is rain and snow showers in the morning with sun returning later in the day. A high near 39 is forecast Monday and temperatures rapidly dropping to 9 by midnight.
St. Francis' first baby of 2014 arrived at 5:10 a.m.

Austin Taylor Vandiver was born at 5:10 a.m. to become the first 2014 baby born at St. Francis Hospital. Austin’s parents are Christina and Taylor of Greenville and he joins sister Isabelle in the family.
Austin weighed in at 8 pounds and 4 ounces.
