One person died after a house fire at 412 Poinsett Street in Greer.

John Benjamin Norris, 90, was killed, according to Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans. The cause of death was reported as asphyxiation by the coroner on Thursday.

The Greer Fire Department said the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Firefighters from the GFD responded to a call when a passerby observed heavy smoke coming from the home. The fire was mostly out when firefighters arrived according to the GFD.

The firefighters found Norris unresponsive outside his bedroom where the fire apparently started, according to the GFD. CPR attempts to revive Norris were unsuccessful.

All four lanes of West Poinsett Street were closed near Memorial Drive until shortly after 10 a.m.

The GFD, Fire Marshal, coroner’s office and officials from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the fire.
