The Miss South Carolina Media Award will be named in honor of Spartanburg’s Jan Scalisi. She died last Thursday after battling an aggressive form of cancer since August.

“The Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization lost a friend and a volunteer this week,” Ashley Byrd, President/Executive Director stated. “Jan volunteered for our organization for over 30 years. Her professionalism was admired by all that knew her.”

Scalisi was accommodating to media, treating first time reporters/photographers with a professional guidance rarely seen in pageants. “She served as the Media chair,” Byrd stated. “She was named volunteer of the year in 2010.”

Scalisi, 61, was a journalist and communication consultant in Spartanburg, where she also was into her second term with city council.

“Jan was a wonderful writer for us and hosted many press conferences throughout her years of service.  She will be greatly missed by this organization as our dear friend.  We will be naming the Miss South Carolina Media Award in her memory,” Byrd stated.
