Proveaux wins Bobby Chapman Invitational by 1 stroke

Caleb Proveaux from Lexington recorded a second round 6-under 65 to win the 20th Annual Bobby Chapman S.C. Junior Golf Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg Sunday.

Proveaux beat first-round leader Andy Ogletree of Little Rock, Miss., and Charles Huntzinger of Duluth, Ga., one stroke.

Proveaux is the sixth South Carolinian to win the tournament. He made six birdies for his 32-33 final round. Ogletree made five bogeys on the back nine.

The 82-player field represented 16 states, including 15 state champions, 29 USGA qualifiers and six AJGA victories.  Twenty-five of the players are ranked inside the top 100 of eitherGolfweek or Junior Golf Scoreboard.  Robin Wang (Lake Mary, Fla.) was the top ranked player in the field at No. 2 in the country.

Invitational alumni have won 48 PGA tour titles including The Masters (Bubba Watson), U.S. Open (Lucas Glover) and FedEx Cup (Bill Haas).  Other notable alumni include Jonathan Byrd, Dustin Johnson, William McGirt, Kevin Kisner, Scott Brown and Brian Harmon.

Collectively, nearly $200 million has been earned on the PGA Tour by alumni.

The Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational is held in honor of the late Robert H. “Bobby” Chapman, Jr.  Chapman, a longtime member of the Country Club of Spartanburg, was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association and Carolinas Golf Association.
