Jonathon Sharpe, former linebacker with North Greenville University, has been invited to rookie mini camp with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
Sharpe, from Conway, recorded 132 tackles including 23.5 for a loss, 5.5 sacks, and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Sharpe, a two-year starter, transferred from Wofford College in 2011. He ran the 40-yard-dash in 4.39 seconds at a pro-day set up by the South Carolina College All Star bowl, which was hosted by North Greenville University.
Sharpe is 5-foot-11 and played at 217 pounds at NGU.
“If feels great to be given an opportunity to continue to play football,” Sharpe said in a statement released by the school. “Most guys don’t get this opportunity, and I feel truly blessed. I’ve had a great supporting cast around me, that has always believed in me, and I am thankful for that.”
The Citadel defensive end Chris Billingslea joins Sharpe as one of the 10 free agents picked up by the Seahawks.
Billingslea played in all 44 games at The Citadel and started the final 39. In 2012 he led the Bulldogs with 9.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks and was named second team All-Southern Conference for the second straight year.
The defensive end from Fort Mill, finished his career tied for sixth in school history with 13 sacks and also ranks 17th with 29.5 tackles for loss.
The Seahawks open off-season training camps in mid-May.
