DUNCAN – The Byrnes Rebels came back with the game’s final two touchdowns to overcome the Greer Yellow Jackets, 39-26, Friday night in both team’s high school football’s opening game.
Nijaw Crouch recovered a fumble by teammate Jaxon Youngblood and ran it 34 yards for a touchdown with 5:03 left in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 31-26 lead over Greer. Clayton Crile’s kick put Byrnes ahead 32-26.
Byrnes added insurance points when quarterback B.J. Peake connected with Ben Henson on a 68-yard touchdown. Crile’s extra point made the final margin with 11:28 left in the game.
The Yellow Jackets went toe-to-toe with the Rebels in the first half, trailing 25-19. But Greer scored first in the third quarter when Dre Williams ran for a 9-yard score to tied the game at 25. Placekicker Edwin Sales point after kick was good to give the Yellow Jackets a 26-25 lead.
Greer would be held scoreless the remainder of the game.
The Yellow Jackets outgained Byrnes in total yardage, 83 plays/419 yards versus the Rebels’ 53-386 ouput.
Dre Williams of Greer scored three touchdowns and led all rushers with 258 yards on 30 carriers for an 8.6 yards average. Williams also returned a punt 96 yards for a touchdown.
Trey Houston completed 18 of 31 pass attempts for 151 yards. Houston has not thrown an interception as a varsity starting quarterback, including all games last year.
BJ Peake had an outstanding game as Byrnes quarterback completing 19 of 31 pass attempts for three TDs and 321 yards. Ben Henson (68 yard scoring play), Braylin Johnson (48 yards) and TJ Young (6 yards) caught TD passes.
Henson caught 10 passes for 158 yards.
