Markell Tyquann Nesbitt, 16, of Lee Street in Lyman, died Monday while swimming with a group of friends when he went under and did not resurface at Lyman Lake.

A Byrnes High School football player who drowned in Lyman Lake Monday was a lifeguard at a Spartanburg recreation center, according to reports.

Markell Tyquann Nesbitt, 16, of Lee Street in Lyman was swimming with a group of friends when he went under and did not resurface.

The search for Nesbitt began when a dive team was called to the lake around 1:30 p.m. They found Nesbitt’s body around 7 p.m.

Nesbitt was swimming with a group of friends off Carshalton Drive. None of the youths did anything wrong, Spartanburg Sheriff Chuck Wright said. Foul play is not suspected, Wright said.

The teens were at a private home at a dock and went for a swim, Wright said. No alcohol was involved, according to Wright.

Nesbitt’s father, William Nesbitt, told WYFF Tuesday morning, “I just wish he was still here with them, but he was a great, great kid. He believed in himself, loved church. He did everything in church.”

Nesbitt is a rising junior at Byrnes played was listed as a wide receiver and cornerback. The school’s statement released Monday read:

"Markell Nesbitt was a beloved student and member of our Byrnes High School family.  Our hearts in District Five are broken and we ask for prayers for the Nesbitt family, and for our students, team, coaches and staff as they deal with this tragic loss.”

Tyger River Fire Department, EMS and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office were called to Carshalton Drive.

Players gathered at an undisclosed location Monday and counselors will be at Byrnes Tuesday.
