Notre Dame football got one present a little early on Thursday.
Greer standout Troy Pride, Jr. announced his verbal commitment to attend and play for Notre Dame via Twitter on Christmas Eve.
North Carolina defeated South Carolina Saturday 54-39 in the 79th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas at Wofford’s Gibbs Stadium. The 93 total points scored broke the previous high of 80 points in 2000.
Austin Kendall (Oklahoma commit) threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another to lead North Carolina. He completed 13 of 16 passes for 190 yards and was named the Offensive MVP for North Carolina.
In between drills during practice for Saturday's 79th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, Greer defensive back Troy Pride was moving a little like music was being piped into his helmet.
"It's been a great week," Pride said. "I'm just really trying to have fun."
The grand opening of GrandSouth Bank Wednesday made it a keystone on a section of prime real estate of Wade Hampton Blvd.
Jack Lucas, Greer market manager of GrandSouth, and his daughter, Heidi, cut the ceremonial ribbon. However the ribbon was a roll of $20 bills, symbolic in that $500 was contributed to Greer Community Ministries and to the Greer High School booster club. “We feel it’s important to be part of the Greer community,” Lucas said.
Greer was awarded the coach, player and 10 positions on the Region II-3A football team.
Will Young earned coach of the year for leading Greer to a 10-0 region record. The Yellow Jackets were ousted in the second round of the playoffs.
Caroline Robertson, Executive Director of Greer Relief, announced the Christmas Parade winning entries.
Thousands of people attended the parade on a sunny, cool afternoon. Lonnie “Gee” McGee returned from his new residence in Clinton and joined more than 90 units and Santa Claus traveling the little more than one-mile rout.
Newly minted South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp zeroed in on one of his top recruits Tuesday, reportedly visiting Greer defensive back Troy Pride, Jr.
Muschamp, who was introduced Monday as Steve Spurrier's successor at the helm of the Gamecocks, wasted no time hitting the recruiting trail. Online reports indicated that Muschamps traveled to Greer along with former interim head coach Shawn Elliott.
The Greer Christmas Parade put an exclamation point on the weekend’s Christ in Greer activities.
“We had perfect weather, people came out early which was great, we had a larger group (92) of entries and Santa was feeling good this year speaking and walking with the crowd, Caroline Robertson, Executive Director of Greer Relief, and the organizing non-profit for the third consecutive year.
More than 90 entries have been announced for Sunday's Greer Christmas Parade.
The star of the annual parade, titled An International Christmas, is typically Santa Claus. Santa will have some extra help this year.
Lonnie “Gee” McGee will be at the parade taking his usual place leading the Greer High School Marching Band.
