The annual celebration of German tradition is scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 5 with the Greer State Bank Greer Station Oktoberfest.
Oompah bands and German food, beer and wine will be featured from noon to 10 p.m. for the free festival. It is one of two main events the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce produces.
The little girl in the photo to the left, appears to be a tad sad to see her $2 going to the Greer Idol ballot box Friday night. Casting a vote cost $1 each for three choices.
Kieffer Mendoza won Greer Idol and Kody Young won Greer Idol Teen, sponsored by Greer Cultural Arts. They earned $1,500 and $500, respectively. It should be noted that Young was making his public singing debut in the teen competition.
Hard to imagine Kody Young’s first time in a competition – or even singing publicly – he received $500.
That’s exactly what Young earned Friday night when he swept to the 2013 Greer Teen Idol finals and took home the first place check.
Kieffer Mendoza, the guitar player with the silky voice, won 2013 Greer Idol and the $1,500 first place check tonight at the City of Greer amphitheater.
Mendoza had to beat out five other Idol contestants as the competition lost two weeks because of rain and was threatened to throw the final into a quandary with an early afternoon shower.
Anna McCleer will be competing Saturday at the annual Summer Idol at the Governor’s School of Arts & Humanities. The event’s proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
McCleer, who has participated in Greer Idol the past two years, performed to songs she wrote, including one for her father while he served in Afghanistan last summer. She finished third in Greer Teen Idol.

The payday for a Greer Idol winner will average $500 per performance.
Rain cancelled the past two Tunes in the Park and Idol performances, meaning winners will compete a maximum of three weeks – weather permitting. The summer entertainment series has only been held June 28, at the City’s Freedom Blast celebration.

The hopes of greater Greer in the 2013 Miss South Carolina Pageant rests on five queens representing different communities in the upstate.
The girls reported to Columbia Friday, will have social activities Saturday and Sunday. They begin their first day in competition Monday when all meet with judges for the all important interviews.

It’s “Military Appreciation Month” at Hollywild Animal Park. All members and veterans of the Armed Forces showing their military ID at the admissions gate get in free during July. Family members entering with a military member receive a 15 percent admission discount.
