Kieffer Mendoza won 2013 Greer Idol and $1,500.
 
 

The Greer Idol finalists have been announced with 10 vying for the Greer Idol title and 12 for Greer Idol Teen.

Kieffer Mendoza won Greer Idol and Kody Young, making his public singing debut, won Greer Idol Teen last year. They earned $1,500 and $500, respectively. The contest was shortened to three weeks when rain wiped out two of the scheduled performances.

Services for Kathleen Schultz, mother of Pelham Batesville firefighter Patrick Schultz, are Sunday in Florida. She died last Sunday in a plane crash that claimed her grandson, Nicholas Evvan Huy Hoang, and her sister, Nancy Carolyn Moore.

Patrick Schultz was piloting the plane when it crashed shortly after takeoff at Fountain, Fla. He is in the Augusta (Ga.) Burn Center.

Community invited to participate in PFT's next master plan

The Partnership for Tomorrow (PFT), a community initiative formed in 1998 for the future of Greer, is inviting participation from the greater Greer community as it works with design firm Kimley-Horn and Associates’ Charlotte office to develop a community master plan that will serve as a blueprint for Greer for the next two decades.

PFT has sponsored two five-year plans with significant results, and identifies the Greer Community Master Plan as the third installment. Engaging the community to be committed to the planning process and willing to help shape the outcomes is crucial, according to PFT officials.

Free book fair gives students a dozen books for summer reading

Crestview students are already absorbed in free books they selected as part of a $15,000 grant to provide each student with 12 free books.

Crestview was among 18 Greenville County elementary schools and more than 10,000 students awarded a free book fair, “Make Summer Count”.

Each student in grades 4K-5th grade received 12 free books for summer reading.

Council OKs residents to own chickens in backyard

Greer residents can keep up to six chickens in their backyards, but no closer than 50 feet from their neighbors.

City Council amended the livestock ordinance, 6-0, Tuesday night to include domesticated female chickens on property except for duplexes or apartments. Councilman Wayne Griffin who cast the only no vote May 13 was absent.

Pelham Batesville firefighter is critical after deadly plane crash

Patrick Schultz, a career fireman from the Pelham Batesville Fire District, is fighting for his life after a small plane he was piloting crashed Sunday morning in Bay County, Fla., that killed three others.

Florida authorities have identified the victims as Kathleen Schultz, reportedly the mother of the pilot, Nancy Moore (aunt) and Nicholas Hoang, 14, (nephew). No hometowns were available.

Cynthia Samour, upstate McDonald's franchise owner of  two of the Greer fast food restaurants, presented a $1,000 check to Crestview Elementary School Thursday before the start of its successful musical, "Wild and Wooly Big Fat Bully", at the J. Harley Bonds Center.

The presentation was part of a $15,000 investment through the McCreative Kids Art Grants program the past three years of the McDonald's owner/operators of the Upstate, Western North Carolina and Northeast Georgia.

Simpsonville will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday at 2 p.m. at the city’s “Veterans Corner,” at SE Main and Richardson Streets, (400 SE Main St.).

United States Senator Lindsey Graham is the scheduled speaker. Graham continues to serve his country as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He is the only U.S. Senator serving in the Guard or Reserves.

Greer Middle Charter earns $10,000 for delivering 8,868 food items to Greer Relief

A Greer Middle College student is delivering some of the 8,868 food items collected to Greer Relief in the Feinstein Challenge. GMC earned a $10,000 grant, one of five awarded nationally.
 
 

Greer Relief and Greer Middle College Charter High School (GMC) combined on a win-win challenge that earned the non-profit 8 truckloads of food donations and the school $10,000.

Executive Director Caroline Robertson invited GMC to compete for a grant from the Feinstein High School Challenge. Alan Shawn Feinstein, for the 17th consecutive year, divided $1 million among hunger fighting agencies. It was Greer Relief’s first time participating in the challenge.
