Church at Greer Station celebrates inaugural anniversary

Church staff and members minister to children and families attending Moonlight Movies at Greer City Park. 
 

The Church at Greer Station will celebrate its one-year anniversary at its new home next Sunday, Sept. 6.  A free lunch and birthday cake, catered by Laurenda's Catering, will follow the 10am service.

The church, founded by Trevor Hoffman and David Eill, held its first Sunday gathering at Greer Community Ministries on April 20, 2014. Five months later it moved to Grace Hall on Trade Street and held the first public service on Sept. 7.

Presidential Republican candidate Sen. Ted Cruz stopped in Mutt's for a late barbecue lunch before his townhall meeting at the Cannon Centre this evening.

Cruz was in town for a 6:30 p.m. appearance that is open to the public.

Blue Ridge turned in impressive performances in jamborees. The Tigers are ready to keep that momentum rolling into their regular season opener Friday night.

Blue Ridge hosts Wade Hampton. The Generals have already played a game, losing their opener to Dorman last Friday, 49-7.

Wade Hampton sports a massive front line on both sides of the ball. Devante Scott, at 6-foot-2 325 pounds, and Doug Babb, 6-4, 300, anchor the defensive line. The Generals are also large along the offensive front, with 6-4, 305 junior Matt Malphrus plowing the road for running back Josh Edwards.

Greer gets 3 hours a month for domestic violence court trial initiated by AG

Greer and Simpsonville are partnering with the S.C. Attorney General’s office to establish domestic violence courts beginning Oct. 8, according to an announcement generated by the City of Greer communications department.

The courts will be in session the second Thursday of each month beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Greer and 1:30 p.m. in Simpsonville.

Terrence Gist, ESPN's poster player for longest home run during the Little League World Series, was smothered for autographs.
 

More people greeted the Northwest Little League All-Stars returning Thursday to Greer’s GSP airport than presidential Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Trump had come and gone for his speaking engagement in Greenville by the time the Northwood Little League players and their families came down the escalator. A crowd of several hundred family, friends and supporters cheered their heroes home from the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Greer police department benefit softball tournament is Saturday

Det. Dale Arterburn's Greer softball team wasn't first last year, but the team recorded the most serious injury.
 
 

The 4th annual Greer Police Department softball tournament is Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Century B Park (Kids Planet) on Brushy Creek Road.

Eleven law enforcement and public safety teams will play in the one-day, double elimination tournament.

Abbott's Frozen Custard is locating in downtown Greer at the former Dixie Shoe Shop.
 

Mark Khoury likes Abbott’s Frozen Custard so much he bought a franchise and is bringing it to Greer.

Khoury is visiting family in Rochester, N.Y., this week, home of Abbott’s, and making a daily run, sometimes more than once, for the frozen treat he grew up eating.

The development, at I-85, Garlington Road and Pelham Road, will feature a multifamily development, office/professional uses, and restaurants, according to an announcement by Central Realty Holdings, a real estate investment company.

The natural gas department of the Greer Commission of Public Works could not have picked a better time to show off its bronze level SOAR (System Operational Achievement Recognition) award.

During the monthly CPW commissioners meeting, General Manager Jeff Tuttle espoused the work the gas department accomplished.

Belk sold, no store closings, layoffs announced
AUG 24, 2015

None of the 297 Belk stores are planning to be closed, according to a company spokeswoman.
 

Belk Inc. announced it would be acquired by Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm based in New York, in a transaction valued at about $3 billion including debt. Sycamore, in its biggest ever deal, will pay $68 in cash for each share of Belk.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based department store chain, operates 297 stores throughout the South, including one in Greer.

Taylors game time changed, rain washes out LLWS on Day 1

The support back home in Taylors continues while the Northwood Little League learned opening ceremonies and all games and practices were rained out Thursday at Williamsport, Pa.
 
 

Steady rain cancelled today’s opening ceremonies at the Little League World Series and forced the Northwood Little League team to change its scheduled game time on Friday.

Northwood’s game as Southeast champions will be played at 5 p.m., one hour later than previously scheduled on Friday. The Taylors team will play New England at historic Lamade Stadium. Northwood will be the visitors.
