Santa confirmed for Greer Christmas Parade on Dec. 8

The Greer Christmas Parade is Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2:30 p.m. Santa has confirmed he will be in the parade.

The Greer Christmas Parade is scheduled Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2:30 p.m.

Kyndra Kemp, Chairperson Greer Relief Christmas Parade, said the theme is "Home for the Holidays". Kemp said entrants should decorate floats to reflect their vision of home for the holidays.

Stegall has served Greer on a myriad of boards including the Greer Development Corporation, Partnership for Tomorrow, Village Hospital Advisory Board and the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce.

City Council votes claim Greer Baptist Association property as an office

Randy Bradley spoke in favor of the Greer Baptist Association property to be rezoned OD (office district).

City government’s alphabet soup of zoning ordinances was stirred up as Greer Baptist Association’s property at 309 W. Poinsett Street sought a change from residential to commercial status. Nearby residential owners, meanwhile, try to digest exactly how the request will end on Oct. 8.

City Council voted, 4-2, on first reading Tuesday, for the residential property (RM-1) to be rezoned OD (office district). The OD recommendation moves forward for the second and final reading in two weeks. The designation differs little from C-2.

Stegall reflects on his tenure as Greer CPW general manager

Nick Stegall ends his 4 ½ -year tenure as General Manager at Greer Commission of Public Works Friday, the day of his formal retirement from lifetime service to public works. He will be honored tonight at City Council with a proclamation.

Nick Stegall ends his 4 ½ -year tenure as General Manager at Greer Commission of Public Works Friday, the day of his formal retirement from lifetime service to public works. Stegall has served Greer on a myriad of boards including the Greer Development Corporation, Partnership for Tomorrow, Village Hospital Advisory Board and the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce.

In Part I of an interview with GreerToday.com that was as much reflective as looking ahead, Stegall shared his commitment to the utilities and what he sees for Greer’s future. Part II will be published Wednesday featuring Stegall’s proclamation and recognition at City Hall.

Late-season migratory bird regulations set

The S.C. Natural Resources Board, the policy-making body of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR), recently approved the 2013-2014 late migratory bird seasons and regulations from a framework set by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The season and bag limit selections must be approved by the Service and published in the Federal Register. The 2013-14 migratory bird brochure will be available soon.

Greer BMW plant produces 2.5 millionth vehicle

Vehicle number 2,500,000 was a Mineral White Metallic BMW X5 xDrive50i with Terra Dakota Leather and M Sport Package.  The X5 is destined for BMW of San Antonio in San Antonio, Tex.

Greer’s BMW Manufacturing plant has reached another milestone in the history of the company’s only North American manufacturing facility – 2.5 million vehicles produced in the plant’s nearly 20-year history.

Property owners convince commissioners to deny zoning request

Freida Gray, left, and Erin and Perry Williams convinced planning commissioners to deny Greer Baptist Association-owned property to be rezoned commercial.

Commissioners had to take sides against one of two friends of the city and it made for a gut-wrenching decision on a downtown rezoning request.

The City of Greer Planning Commission voted 5-0 to deny property owned by the Greer Baptist Association (GBA) at 309 West Poinsett Street to be rezoned from residential to C-2 (commercial) for the purpose of operating a Christian bookstore.

Rev. William B Moore, a Church of God minister for over 60 years including pasturing seven churches, went home to be with the Lord and joined his beloved wife Jeanette on September 15, 2013.

Rev. William B. Moore, a Church of God minister for over 60 years including pasturing seven churches, went home to be with the Lord and joined his beloved wife Jeanette on September 15, 2013.

He was the son of the late William B. and Macie Lee Padgett Moore, Sr. He proudly served his country in the US Naval Forces during World War II. A man of many gifts, yet always staying on his knees in prayer and remaining true to his calling to “win souls for Christ.”

Claycamp given a hero's welcome at Dooley Field

Army Spc. Brett Claycamp was honored Friday night before the Jacket Bowl. Claycamp and his fiance, Catherine Owens, join Greer High School Principal Marion Waters on Dooley Field.

Greer football fans gave Army Spc. Brett Claycamp a special thank you Friday night at Dooley Field for his service and sacrifice. He was injured in a rocket attack in Afghanistan in May and is the recipient of the Purple Heart.

Claycamp played football at Greer High School and was honored Friday before the annual Jacket Bowl with rival Union High School. Fans gave Claycamp a prolonged standing ovation.

Brett Claycamp, not too many years removed from Greer High School, was part of the tradition of the team entering Dooley Field through the smoke.

Hometown hero Army Spc. Brett Claycamp will be honored Friday at Dooley Field at 7 p.m., before the start of the Greer vs. Union football game.

Claycamp, winding up his leave to visit family and fiancé Catherine Owens, is a Purple Heart recipient. He was wounded in a rocket attack in Afghanistan in May. Claycamp will return to Walter Reid Army hospital to have surgery to repair nerve damage suffered in the attack.

Duke Energy approved for rate hike that begins Sept. 18

Duke Energy can raise its rates to residential customers in South Carolina 10 percent over two years. The state Public Service Commission approved the rate hike Wednesday.

That will reflect in higher customer bills beginning Sept. 18. The second rate hike occurs on the same date in 2014.

9/11: A new generation is being taught to 'Never Forget'

Phil and Angela Mistrulli-Cantone, with their daughter Adriana, 2, observe the 9/11 Memorial ceremony Wednesday at the Boiling Springs Fire Department. Phil was a fireman in Long Island who responded to the call at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Angela's father was killed while working at Windows on the World.

Adrianna Capone was oblivious to two firemen talking behind her about a new generation of children who have only recently been born since the attacks on 9/11 in 2001 that killed 3,000. The poignant discussion took place at the 9/11 Memorial at the Greenville County Boiling Springs Fire Department, minutes before a service remembering and reflecting on the tragedy.

Their point was toddlers and children of the next generation will have little memory of the fateful day and the aftermath that embroiled the United States into conflicts that continue today.

Greer ranked 4th-best city in South Carolina to raise a family

Greer is ranked the fourth-best city in South Carolina to raise a family, according to NerdWallet. The city's quality of life was among the categories where Greer received high marks.

Greer is ranked the fourth-best place in South Carolina, according to NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website produced by young professionals in San Francisco.

Greer was assessed on its cost of living, education system and economic growth. “Greer provides great schools while housing prices and costs are among the lowest of towns that comprise the top ten,” said Laura Zulliger of NerdWallet.

Greer State Bank is introducing a new initiative to bring financial literacy education to Greer High School students by providing them with access to the “EverFi – Financial Literacy” learning platform. 

The web-based program – Dollar$cholar – uses media technology – simulations, avatars, gaming and adaptive-pathing – to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation.  Through this platform, students will become certified in hundreds of topics in personal finance, allowing them to become more informed, responsible citizens.

Gambrell, 3-sport star at Greer High School, dies

William Larry “Goose” Gambrell, 69, of Lyman died Sunday. He was a 1963 graduate of Greer High School where he played football, basketball and ran track. He held many school records and played in the 1962 Shrine Bowl game.

Gambrell was also inducted into the Greer High School Hall of Fame.

NewSpring gets variance for parking to accommodate 820 vehicles

NewSpring Church was granted a variance for parking at its 12-acre campus between Hwy. 14 and Buncombe Road that will accommodate 820 vehicles. That’s nearly 500 more than required (350).

GreerToday.com reported NewSpring's venture into Greer last week, after its closing on the former Hot Spot on Hwy. 14 that completed the acquisition.

GSP marketing 2,500 acres for mixed-use development

GSP commissioners were given an overview of GSP 360 – Beyond The Runway, a website that is being used for marketing and development for 2,500 acres on nine tracts of land being offered for mixed-use development.

GSP Airport has launched a new website to market 2,500 acres on nine tracts of property identified for development in its 2012 land use study.

Commissioners for Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport viewed a presentation, “GSP 360 – Beyond the Runway” on Monday that is being used for collateral marketing materials and development purposes. The study identified tracts of land that could be used for economic development such as light industrial to larger warehouse and distributors and manufacturers.

New campus for Greer Middle College Charter integrates sense of community

This is the rendering of Greer Middle College Charter High School provided by David Langley of Langley Associates Architects of Greer. Two buildings are for academics, one for administration and the other a gymnasium/cafe.

The image of 29 portable buildings around a makeshift courtyard in a field is the visualization David Langley of Langley Associates Architects used as inspiration for his design of  the future Greer Middle College Charter (GMCC) High School.

Langley was in attendance this morning at Village Hospital’s Community Center when GMCC Principal Bill Roach presented to community leaders the design, costs and tentative schedule for the proposed $10.9 million campus to be located across from Greenville Technical College in Greer. Greenville Tech will lease GMCC the land for the facilities.

The former convenience store at Hwy. 14 South and Hammett Bridge Road will be the site of the planned NewSpring Church.

NewSpring Church is planning a Greer campus on 12 acres sandwiched between Hwy. 14 and Buncombe Road.

The property will abut Greer State Bank at 871 S. Buncombe Road and across the McDonald’s on Hammett Bridge Road.
