Employees from businesses on Poinsett Street and Trade Street waved American flags while veterans wearing military caps, designating their service and units, saluted.
Cheers, clapping and whistles greeted the convoy that arrived about 2:17 p.m. following a lunch stop in Spartanburg. People were seven and eight deep at spots from Rivera’s to Main Street.
Drivers and passengers in the convoy returned salutes. Horns honked, sirens wailed and patriotic music blared throughout their brief drive through Greer.
More than 100 military vehicles and their support staff paraded through downtown Greer, on Poinsett Street, to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the U.S. Army’s cross country trip on the Bankhead Highway.
The vehicles followed the same route as the original 1920 Transcontinental Motor Convoy route. The convoy is expected to arrive in San Diego on Oct. 17.
The Greer Police Department escorted the convoy through town while officers halted traffic at intersections.
