I rolled the dice and lost this year. I planted my garden March 15 and proudly announced that I thought I had beaten the frost. On April 12 a hailstorm left me with a half acre of bare dirt and empty tomato cages. So much for outsmarting Mother Nature. We replanted on April 20 and I saw the first sprouts this morning. The tomatoes survived two near misses with frost, and we're on our way.
Sixteen restaurants and food vendors will be at the Village Hospital Greer Family Fest May 4-5. Seven restaurants will occupy the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Food Court in City Park. Nine other vendors will be located throughout the festival.
“We are excited to offer a variety of food choices and options in our Greenville- Spartanburg Airport Food Court and throughout the festival. We hope people will eat lunch and dinner with us as well as treat themselves to some traditional festival food.” stated Dana Martin, of the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce.
A beer garden party awaits those who will be attending the Upstate International Beer Fest inside the Bi-Lo Center Saturday. The festival will be centered on craft beers, a growing phenomenon in the United States and around the world.
A beer garden ambience is the goal, with an environment in which people can hang out and enjoy the festival with live music and corn holing. Festival organizers, Friday afternoon, decided to hold the Beer Fest indoors because a chance of rain was forecast in the Upstate Saturday.
In its first cross-brand product partnership, Hellmann's has announced the launch of a new limited edition flavor: Hellmann's Spicy Buffalo with Frank's RedHot. The flavor combines the creaminess of Hellmann's mixed with Frank's authentic Buffalo flavor.

Americans have a sweet tooth and proclaim chocolate candies as their favorite indulgence, according to the just released 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend (EQ) study, an annual study of brand equity, conducted by Harris Interactive.
In the perennial battle of the brands, Hershey’s Kisses is the top ranked chocolate candy brand for the fifth time in eight years. America’s favorite little chocolate candy unseats one of its most enduring competitors, M&M’s Plain Chocolate Candy, which has occupied the top spot whenever Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate Candy hasn’t.
Nestlé Prepared Foods Company, a Gaffney establishment, is recalling approximately 16,890 pounds of Stouffer's lasagna frozen entrées that may instead contain stuffed peppers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The stuffed peppers contain Worcestershire sauce made with anchovies, a known allergen that is not declared on the lasagna labels.

Arby's is giving away $5,000 to the grand prize winner of its Tax Day promotion, and also will reward customers across the country with free value-sized Curly Fries on April 17.

Wendy's new Spicy Chicken Guacamole Club is the latest addition to its line of chicken offerings.
The Spicy Guacamole Chicken Club starts with Wendy's original Spicy Chicken whole filet and brings extra heat with a slice of all-natural pepper jack cheese. To balance the heat, Wendy's adds a zesty ranch sauce and creamy, natural guacamole. Next comes Wendy's thick-cut applewood smoked bacon, a full slice of tomato and hand-leafed lettuce, all on a buttered toasted bun.
Starbucks Coffee Co. will debut a new line of caffeinated fruit drinks called Starbucks Refreshers, which will be available in cans and in customizable blends in the chain’s coffeehouse locations.
The plans mark the company’s move into the $8 billion energy drink category.

Chili's Grill & Bar, to celebrate the end of another income tax season, is offering guests a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of an adult entree, Monday, April 16 through Wednesday, April 18.
Appetizers include Southwestern Eggrolls, Skillet Queso, Boneless Buffalo Wings, Loaded Potato Skins and the like, and desserts include Oreo Molten Cake, a warm Brownie Sundae, Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie and more.
Taxpayers can take their first deductions of the year on April 17 -– Tax Day -– with half-price drinks from SONIC. Participating drive-in locations nationwide will celebrate by extending Happy Hour all day, with fountain drinks and slushes at half price.

The Ember restaurant family and friends will remember Ryan Storrie Saturday at the Upstate Heart Walk at Greer City Park.
Storrie, 29, died of a heart attack in January, one month after he realized his dream of opening his first restaurant, with Tim Kearns, his close friend and business partner. Storrie and Tim Kearns, his best friend, partnered in opening the restaurant.
The cold overnight temperatures caused some tall tomato plants to have black leaves and a few to wild at the Greer Community Garden, reported Master Gardener Buddy Waters. “We didn’t have a freeze and only a few of the plants were harmed,” Waters said. “The gardeners need to pull off the black leaves on the plants that have not been harmed.
Waters is overseeing the community garden on land Greer Memorial Hospital has provided for 54 gardeners and their plots. “I noticed bags and buckets over plants and that’s the best that needed to be done,” Waters said.
Dunkin’ Donuts is offering any size cup of freshly brewed iced tea for 99 cents during April. The offer is good nationwide.

Dotti and Wayne Morrow tended to their plot at the community garden today. It had been two weeks since the garden, with the land provided by Greer Memorial Hospital, had plots cleaned of rocks and debris.
The Morrows took advantage of the sunny, warm weather today to check on the soil that had been deluged by rain on Thursday night. One week earlier heavy rains during the weekend prevented the gardeners to get in some preparation and planting.

Store hours, effective immediately, are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sunday noon – 6 p.m.
“American Idol” contestant Joshua Ledet is getting a special delivery in Hollywood courtesy of his home state of Louisiana — tamales from Zwolle, a town rich in Spanish and Indian heritage.
Ever since Ledet, a native of Westlake, La., mentioned on the Fox reality TV show several weeks ago that one of the things he missed most while competing in Los Angeles was Louisiana food, the Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne has been overseeing shipments of Louisiana eats in what he calls a “Feed the Dream” effort.
In the next 12 months, Burger King and its franchisees will be revamping the menu and updating the look.
The menu revamping, which is being unveiled today, has several new items.
