Surprise homecoming just in time for trick-and-treating

A hug Gunnery Sgt. Jacqueline Samuel received Friday was “like heaven,” she said.

Bree, 6, and Milani, 4, were surprised beyond belief when Samuel met up with her daughters for the first time since last December. Bree ran to her mother and wrapped her arms around Jacqueline. Milani was a little more tentative, unsure if what she was seeing was real or imagined.

Bryant Center honors businesses, community leaders

The Bryant Center of the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department held its annual awards ceremony recently to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month and to recognize business and community leaders who support the agency's mission.

Publix grocery store in Duncan was recognized as the Business Partner of the Year for providing employment opportunities for clients. Sarah Gaff talked about how she used Bryant Center services to become an employee at Publix.

Bass Pro Shops acquires land for development on Greer's border

Bojangles' opened its newest Greer store Monday on Highway 101, directly across from BMW. A Spinx will be built this winter next door with properties bordering the Bass Pro Shops development scheduled to open in 2016.
 

Bass Pro Shops closed on its purchase of 75 acres of land Thursday on the border of Greer in Spartanburg County at the intersection of I-85 and Highway 101.

The price was not disclosed between Bass Pro Shops and Milliken Enterprises. The imminent partnership was announced in April.

Weekend cold snap has CPW asking customers to plan ahead
OCT 28, 2014

CPW customers are asked to call 864-848-5518 to have their pilot lights lit before the cold snap scheduled for this weekend.
 

Customers of Greer Commission of Public Works are asked to contact the utility this week for pilot lights to be lit in anticipation  of near-freezing temperatures in the greater Greer area this weekend.

Saturday and Sunday low temperatures are forecast for 34 and 35 degrees, respectively. CPW is closed on weekends except for emergency service.

CPW approved for $1.1 million in parts for 5th substation

Commissioners at Greer CPW approved $1.1 in parts for construction of the utility's fifth substation.
 

Bids for parts have been approved for construction of the fifth substation in the Greer Commission of Public Works inventory.

The three CPW commissioners unanimously approved $1.1 million and General Manager Jeff Tuttle said the lease to the property on the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District site has been signed.

Clark is selected Restaurateur of the Year

The prestigious award is part of the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (SCRLA) recognizing the top members in its association. Peers, suppliers and associates nominate candidates.

Cops for Tots golf tournament kicks off fundraising campaign

Greer Chief Municipal Judge Henry J. Mims, black shirt, sank a birdie putt to make his team happy on this hole in the captain's choice format.
 

Business leaders, attorneys, a municipal judge, a city councilman and others joined host, the Greer Police Department, in the Cops for Tots Charity Golf tournament Thursday.

The tournament at the Greer Country Club is the main fundraiser for the GPD. Proceeds are used to purchase gifts for under privileged children in need in the greater Greer area.

Allen Johnston, co-owner with his wife, Lee Ann, opens the second Bojangles' in Greer within the past two months. They open a Bojangles' across from BMW on Monday.
 

Bojangles' will open its second Greer restaurant within two months Monday morning.

The restaurant opens at 5 a.m. across from BMW at 1487 Highway 101 South. Owners Lee Ann and Allen Johnston opened Bojangles' at Buncombe in August. The Johnstons own five Bojangles' in the Greenville-Spartanburg area.

Guns, knives, grenades are a normal month of abandoned items at GSP

The table full of grenades, knives, guns, wrenches, brass knuckles and liquids over 3.4 ounces are a sampling of abandoned property at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport during the past 30 days.
 

Passengers at GSP could have easily surmised a gun and knife show was being held Wednesday at the baggage claim area.

Instead the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had a display table of grenades, guns, knives, a power drill, tools and liquids that were among the 100 pounds of abandoned property during the past 30 days at Greenville-Spartanburg International.

Norfolk Southern adds Saturday outbound train from Inland Port

Norfolk Southern has added a Saturday outbound train from the Greer Inland Port to Charleston. 
 

Norfolk Southern has added a Saturday outbound train from the Greer Inland Port to Charleston. That increases outbound NS service to six trains a week with a Saturday cutoff of 5 p.m. and availability in Charleston by noon the following Monday.

The schedule of inbound trains per week remains at five while the container gates at the South Carolina Inland Port are open 24/7 for truck activity.
