Greer CPW increases go into effect New Year's Day

Greer CPW customers will be paying more for electricity and water and sewer facility charges to raise more than $2 million in 2014 revenue.
 
 

Greer Commission of Public Works customers will be reaching deeper in their pockets paying increasing utility fees beginning Jan. 1. Commissioners voted to:

• increase electricity rates 7 percent.

Downtown to get $2.5 million infrastructure, paving, landscape facelift

Infrastructure along Poinsett Street may be 100 years old. A $2.5-million upgrade in the central business district is tentatively scheduled for 2015.

3 cents stamp increase applies to letters, newspapers, other mailings

First-class mail, newspapers and magazines are among the items that will be affected by the 3 cents U.S. Postal Service rate increase beginning Jan. 26.

Postal regulators on Tuesday approved a price hike of 3 cents for a first-class stamp making the cost of mailing a letter 49 cents.

The price increase will apply to first-class mail, magazines, newspapers, advertising mail and bills — which together account for most of the 158 billion pieces of mail delivered every year.

IHOP opening is planned for March

The infrastructure at IHOP at Suber Commons was being developed this week. The restaurant is tentatively scheduled for a mid-March opening.

The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) is tentatively scheduled to open its Greer store in mid-March at Suber Commons at the corner of Wade Hampton Blvd. and Suber Road.

A spokesperson told GreerToday.com that was the best guess based on typically sized units built without regard to weather and other construction influences. The timeline for jobs interviews was not available.

Doctors Express will hold a grand opening and open house Saturday and Sunday at 1494 W. Wade Hampton Blvd.

Owner Tim Groves and resident doctors Richard T. Hanna and Winston B. Morris cut the ceremonial Doctors Express ribbon Thursday with a big turnout of city and business leaders. Groves’ public relations group provided a drone to photograph the ceremony.

Michelin issues safety recall for commercial light truck tires
DEC 13, 2013

Michelin North America, Inc. announced a safety recall of approximately 1.3 million of its Michelin LTX M/S commercial light truck tires sold primarily in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. About 1.2 million of these tires were sold in the U.S. The tires are typically found on such vehicles as commercial light trucks, full-sized heavy duty vans, small RVs and some large pickup trucks.

No deaths or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled tires.

City-approved roof repairs for operations center, Kids Planet underway

Two city-owned properties are getting roof repairs for $39,650 combined.

The Operations Center on Pennsylvania Avenue is having its roof recoated after experiencing several leaks. Six picnic shelters and two restroom buildings at Kids Planet Playground will get new roofs.

Jimmy Rogers, Fatz and Copper River Grill founder, passionate Clemson fan, dies

Jimmy Rogers, founder of Fatz Cafe and Copper River Grill, among other restaurant chains, died of liver cancer Wednesday at his Inman home.

Jimmy Rogers, founder of Fatz Café, Copper River Grill and J Jr.’s restaurant chains died of liver cancer at his home Wednesday. Rogers was 66.

Rogers of Inman, grew up in Holly Springs, living in his family’s original home.

Greer Station merchants are offering selected Christmas ideas representing the historic downtown business district.

The 2013 Christmas ornament, designed by The Image Forge, a cookbook with recipes from restaurateurs, merchants and Greer celebrities, and a $10 gift card for discounts in 2014 are available through merchants.

Inland Port working on punch list, container traffic growing

Container traffic at the Inland Port is increasing daily. There were about 1,000 containers on site Wednesday. Containers on the left are imports and the right are exports.

The Greer Inland Port is working through its punch list as container traffic continues to become more frequent. There were a reported 1,000 containers on site Wednesday.

The South Carolina Port Authority has invested $50 million, which had groundbreaking on March 1 and opened for business on Oct. 15.  The nearly 100-acre site required a massive amount of grading – 950,000 cubic yards. There were 180,000 square yards – 40 acres – of concrete poured.

Michelin to produce world's largest tires at new Anderson facility
DEC 12, 2013

The new Michelin plant in Anderson will produce large Earthmover tires – which can stand up to 13 feet tall and weigh up to 5.5 tons.

Michelin celebrated the opening of its Anderson County manufacturing facility Thursday.

The project completion is the fastest greenfield construction in Michelin's history, 17 months, and enables the company to begin production of commercially available tires in January for sale in mid-2014.
