Staggs’ responsibility for Greer State Bank will be to pursue and obtain new opportunities in the commercial market for loan products while maintaining loan relationships with existing customers.  Staggs is involved with analyzing loan requests, monitoring the bank’s lending portfolio, and recommending lending solutions based on customer needs within the Greer and surrounding markets.  She will also represent the bank through her participation with numerous community affairs organizations.

Kohl's moving forward with Greer store

The signage at Piedmont Marketplace shows Kohl's location scheduled to be at the former Kmart store.

Kohl’s in Greer is back on target and is scheduled to open in 2014.

A city official confirmed the exchange of property to Kohl’s and Marty Navarro, the Greenville developer of the Piedmont Marketplace. Navarro also confirmed reports of the department store’s opening in Greer for next year.

Lions Club honors Chick-fil-A's Tyler as Citizen of the Year

Bill Tyler was honored as the Greer Lions Club Citizen of the Year at the club’s annual awards dinner. Tyler is operator at Greer Chick-fil-A.

Bill Tyler was honored as the Greer Lions Club Citizen of the Year and Ken Holliday the Lion of the Year at the club’s annual awards dinner.

Tyler is operator of Chick-fil-A in Greer and Holliday is the Human Resource Manager of Greer Commission of Public Works. Holliday is the treasurer of the Lions Club. Both said they were unaware of being recipients of the award.

Buffets, Inc. reports best quarterly sales in past 7 years

Buffets, Inc., headquartered in Greer, reported sales up 1.7 percent for the quarter ending April 3. It’s the best year-over-year quarterly comparable sales performance in seven years.

Company officials attribute the improvement to the fast track implementation of its turnaround blueprint “Plan to Win” that was launched last July.

CPW Centennial celebration is one for the ages

No more tours at BMW plant until summer 2014

Plant tours at BMW Manufacturing Co. in Greer have been suspended for new model production and not expected to resume until summer of 2014, the company announced today.

BMW Manufacturing is undergoing a $900 million expansion that will allow the production of 350,000 units at its more than 4-million-square-foot facility. The X4, introduced this week at the Shanghai Auto Show as a concept car, has been designated as Greer’s next production model.

Police department asks permanent suspension for wrecker service

Greer City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday to discuss the permanent suspension of Upstate Wrecker Service from the city’s wrecker rotation. The wrecker service was suspended from the city’s rotation on April 1 and the suspension expired on April 15.

The former Bank of Greer is being renovated into a luxury apartment that features a sauna and changing room in two of the vaults.

Imagine a sauna in a bank vault. You can count that as money in the bank, as far as Randy Jones is concerned.

Jones, owner of the former Bank of Greer at 116 Trade Street, told the Board of Architectural Review that will be among a wholesale of renovations to the historical property that will serve as his residence and business. He is also renovating a second property at  114 Trade Street into an insurance business with extra office space that may be leased.

Southern Connector closing 72 hours for Cinemax production

The Southern Connector will shut down for 72 hours next week to allow a television crew on site to film scenes for an upcoming Cinemax production.

The 16-mile toll road that runs across the southern portion of Greenville County between Interstate 85 and 385 will close to normal traffic on Sunday, April 21 at 10 p.m. and reopen Wednesday, April 24 at 10 p.m., said Peter Femia, executive director of the Southern Connector.

Housing developments, Quik Trip keeps city commissions busy

Quik Trip will build a second convenience store in Greer to be located at 2414 S. Highway. The store will be sandwiched between Johns Road and Concourse Way.

A pocket neighborhood and an entire community are in the planning stages, Quik Trip is scheduled to put its second convenience store in Greer, this one S. Highway 14, and three buildings in the central business district are undergoing architecture enhancements.

It’s been a busy week for Greer City Hall and its planning and building boards as developers and property owners paraded their projects for rezoning and plan reviews.

$13.4 million BMW warehouse project underway at inland port

$13.4 million BMW warehouse project underway at inland port

A $13.4 million, 414,534 square foot BMW Manufacturing Co. warehouse is being constructed at the Greer Inland Port. The size is the equivalent to four Wal-Mart SuperStores.

The warehouse will be used for the Greer-produced BMW vehicles to be prepared as kits for as many as three to a rail container for shipment overseas. The containers will be shipped to the Port of Charleston for export.

Allen Bennett complex has second prospective buyer

The Allen Bennett campus consists of two buildings – the 168,000-square foot hospital and 44,000 square-foot Roger Huntington Nursing Center.

The first prospective buyer for the Allen Bennett Hospital campus has come and gone. Now, there’s a second candidate undergoing due diligence, according to City Administrator Ed Driggers.

“We have a letter of intent,” Driggers said. “They basically are seeing if ‘this property works for (them).’
