GSP officials will meet with FAA on malfunction that closed runway Friday night

Dave Edwards, executive director at GSP, will meet with Federation Aviation Administrative tower and facilities officials this week to review Friday night’s protocol and a generator malfunction that caused the airport to shut down its runway for nearly three hours.
Low visibility and fog was blamed for the FAA protocol that called for Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport to switch to generator power. The outage (Approach Light Engine Generator) reportedly occurred at 10:45 p.m. and it went back online at 1:40 a.m., according to airport officials.
Katherine Tippin Smith, sister of Aaron Tippin, graveside service Sunday

Katherine Eleanor Tippin Smith, the sister of country music star Aaron Tippin of Greer, has died. She was 64.
Smith died March 27 at her Williamston home. She is a native of Pensacola, Fla., and was an employee of UPS and a member of the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church in Greer.
Businesses say 'Thank You' to public safety community

The businesses thanked the first responders, the first responders thanked the businesses and everybody thanked the families, spouses and acquaintances of the fire, police and emergency medical services on Thursday night.
The third annual Greer Public Safety Appreciation Dinner on Thursday was an occasion for the business community to celebrate and say “Thank you” to first responders.

Study: $16.6 billion is BMW annual impact in South Carolina

A new study just released by the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, reports that the BMW Group has a $16.6 billion annual impact on the state economy. Its presence in South Carolina supports more than 30,000 jobs throughout the state.
The study found that for every job created at the Greer plant, an additional three jobs are created elsewhere in South Carolina through the economic multiplier effect.

Inland Port receives Economic Development Impact Award

The SC Inland Port (SCIP) in Greer received the Economic Development Impact Award at the Upstate Alliance's annual meeting.
The annual award recognizes a public or private sector project that strengthens the Upstate business climate and enhances the area's marketability to prospective industry, resulting in an overall positive impact to the economic development efforts of the region.
Crowley, Williams receive Principals of Year awards

Principals at Riverside High School and Riverside Middle School were honored Friday night in Greenville as the South Carolina Principal of the Year for their respective grades. They were selected by the South Carolina Parents Teachers Association.
Andy Crowley, principal at Riverside High School, and Eric Williams, principal at Riverside Middle School received their awards at the Greenville Regency Hotel.
Cabela's schedules opening week of special events

Cabela’s will celebrate the grand opening of its Greenville store – the company’s first South Carolina location – with a weekend-long celebration featuring special guests, giveaways and family events.
Crowd entertainment, including a DJ and trivia games, will kick off opening day at 8 a.m. Thursday, April 3. A grand opening ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. with a unique ribbon-cutting ceremony – the ribbon will be cut by an arrow shot from a bow.
36 pounds of unwanted medicines dropped off at police department

Sgt. Chad Richardson reported the first haul of unwanted medicines gathered from the drug locker at the Greer Police Department weighed 36 pounds.
“Those are not pills in their containers, I emptied all the containers before weighing them,” Richardson said. “ Two batches of medicine were also picked up from independent McLeskey-Todd and Professional Pharmacy. “They ran the gamut from aspirins to prescription medicines.”
Greer Fire Department is celebrating centennial anniversary

The Greer Fire Department is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014 with a specially designed badge.
Greer’s fire department was organized Nov. 1, 1914 after the city put in a citywide water system. The first fire chief of record was Mack Fowler. The first fire truck was bought in 1919.
Shelnutt joins United Community Bank as Senior VP

David Shelnutt has joined United Community Bank as senior vice president and manager of its new Structured Finance Department. He will develop and oversee the Structured Finance Group, which will originate and administer loans, monitor collateral and support market lenders across the bank’s footprint.

TSA discovers 3 loaded firearms in carry-on bags at GSP in past week

Three loaded firearms were discovered in carry-on bags March 17-24, at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greer, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported.
• At approximately 9:32 a.m. March 17, a loaded .38 was discovered in a passenger’s carry-on bag.

The smell of a rotten egg permeated the air. “That’s exactly what a gas leak smells like,” Varnadore said.
