Martha Bennett has been appointed operations manager for the Greer Family Shelter by the Daily Bread Ministries board of directors.

Morrison, a former Wofford College Athletic Director and Senior Vice President, was handpicked by Panthers owner Jerry Richardson to be the second in command. Richardson has made Wofford College the Panthers summer practice facility ever since Morrison was AD, beginning in 1985.
Learning shouldn't stop just because school is out. In fact, stepping too far away from the books can result in a learning loss. However, research has shown that encouraging kids to read just six books, or 20 minutes a day, over the summer can help prevent the summer slide.
The key is finding ways to make reading fun, combining education and entertainment for an activity kids can truly enjoy, said Kate DiCamillo, a two-time Newbery Medal Award-winning author and the 2016 Collaborative Summer Library Program National Summer Reading Champion.

A juvenile caused a short lockdown at Greer City Hall Tuesday when he posted a photo on social media pointing a weapon at the complex with the caption “things about to get real”.
The Greer Police Department considered it a possible terrorist threat. All available patrol units and command staff responded to Greer City Hall and the building was thoroughly searched for any active possible shooter, according to the GPD report.

The School District of Greenville County and the City of Greer have renewed a lease agreement for the softball/baseball and football fields at Riverside Middle School.
The 5-year renewal, $1 a year, is effective Sept. 1 through August 2021. The city will play for all utilities associated with the fields while using the facilities.

The Carolina Brotherhood Ride, with firefighters and police officers cycling, passed through downtown Greer Tuesday morning to pay tribute to fallen brothers and sisters from the Carolinas.

Girl Scout Troop 811 of service unit 636 has built and installed two Little Free Libraries in Greenville County – Century Park Kids Planet and St. Giles Presbyterian Church on Hudson Road.
The libraries were part of the Junior’s Bronze award project in which they contribute to an ongoing program. The little free libraries are a “give a book, take a book” program that is within easy access to the public to help encourage literacy in both children and adults.

Olivia Wells, a junior voice major at Anderson University, won the 2016 Greer Idol Season 10 championship and the $2,000 first prize Friday night.
The Northwood Little League begins play in the state championship tournament beginning Saturday in Chester.
Northwood plays Irmo in its first game Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Chester Baseball Complex. The tournament is double elimination.
A Greer Idol contestant will win $2,000 Friday night in the Season 10 finals at the Greer City Park amphitheater.
Will Rawls, Andre Webb and Olivia Wells will compete for the championship Friday rain or shine. Last week’s band did not perform but the six Idol contestants did weather severe thunderstorms to sing in the semifinals.
