100 deadliest days for teen drivers

More than 1,050 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver in 2016 during the 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That is an average of 10 people per day – a 14 percent increase compared to the rest of the year, according to data analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. 

As school lets out for summer, AAA  Carolinas stresses the importance of preparing and educating inexperienced teen drivers for some of the most dangerous driving days of the year.

Students welcome family to Habitat build from Spirit Week funds

Kanya Johnson holds the key to her Habitat home that was made possible by Riverside students raising more than $100,000 during Spirit Week.
 

Kanya Johnson got a special welcome as she moved into her new home on Fairview Avenue Wednesday as Riverside High School students cheered her.

Riverside students raised more than $100,000 during Spirit Week last fall to help fund the construction of Johnson’s new home. Students have also volunteered to help build the house.

A former Eastside High School standout has been awarded the William L. Lumpkin Track & Field Leadership Award at the University of Richmond.

Alex Lucking, from Greer, was recognized as the senior undergraduate member of the University of Richmond team based on outstanding academic and athletic performance, and citizenship.

McAbee named National Merit Finalist

Carson McAbee has been named a 2018 National Merit Finalist.
 

Carson McAbee, a senior at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, has been named a 2018 National Merit Finalist.

McAbee scored a 1550 out of a possible 1600 on the SAT and a 35 out of a possible 36 of the ACT. He is a 2017 USAPL National Champion in weight lifting and also plays baseball at St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

Ken Bixby, the president and CEO of the BJU Education Group, addressed the 83 graduates of Bob Jones Academy during their 91st commencement exercises held Thursday, May 10, in Rodeheaver Auditorium on the BJU campus.

Ali Hermetz of Greenville and Alexander Moreno of Greer were the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

A baccalaureate degree student whose cumulative grade point average is at least 3.5 graduates cum laude, those with at least a 3.75 graduate magna cum laude, and those with at least a 3.9 grade point average graduate summa cum laude.

Virus strikes Chandler Creek Elementary School; 200 children sent home
MAY 10, 2018

Chandler Creek Elementary School was hit by a stomach virus Wednesday that resulted in 200 students being sent home. 

 The majority of the students were in kindergarten, first grade and second grade, according to Beth Brotherrton with Greenville County Schools. Principal Jane Mills called parents Wednesday morning to inform them of the illness.
