Benson Campus is designated for largest cash donation

Signage has unveiled the Jim and Evelyn Benson Center at the Greer Campus of Greenville Technical College to honor the Benson’s $2 million cash gift received by the Greenville Tech Foundation in 2014.

The Bensons pledged an additional $1 million to be paid over five years and Greenville Tech designated the campus and building 301 in their honor.

Accommodations tax advisory committee, members approved by council

Greer City Council approved an Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night. The action was approved after council gave second and final approval to create the committee, establishing guidelines and procedures.

The committee will make recommendations to City Council and set guidelines for the granting of 65 percent of the state accommodations funds awarded Greer to be used for tourism related activities within and for the city

Century Park grant approved, construction begins in 2016

An overview of the new two-story press box, concession stand and restrooms will connect all three fields. The covered picnic area and storage will be between fields one and three.
 

Bids will be advertised within the next week and construction will begin in 2016 for a new press box/concessions/ADA approved restrooms and a picnic area at Century Park.

Y Camp Greenville ground broken on 2-phase $14 million project

Ground was broken for the first of several new facilities to be constructed on the 1,200-acre Y Camp Greenville, in Cleveland.

Representatives and capital campaign donors from The YMCA of Greenville participated in the historic groundbreaking that represents the first phase of a two-phase “Heart of Camp” capital development program. To date, $5.1 million has been raised towards a goal of $7 million. The two-phase capital campaign totals $14 million and is scheduled to be completed over the next several years.

$55,000 and counting for GCM's Big Thursday

Big Thursday raised some big numbers for Greer Community Ministries.

"Preliminary figures put us at or over $55,000 for the event," Krista Gibson of GCM, said. Last week’s 36th annual event held at Fairview Baptist Church helps feed the hungry and vulnerable citizens of Greer.

It appears Abbott’s Frozen Custard will be open in December.

Jason Cole, general manager was handing out candy in an Abbott’s covered cup last Thursday during Halloween on Trade. “We still have a few things to do but it’s coming along,” Cole said. “We hope to be open next month in time for the holidays.”

Big turnout for Big Thursday

Big Thursday was also about getting a sneak peek admiring the little shoppers. Andrea Wilson was at Fairview Baptist Church  with her husband, Roman, and their infant sons, Paxton and Gavin.
 

Before the lights were turned off and doors locked at Fairview Baptist Church, Big Thursday, the Greer Community Ministries fundraiser, was said to be one of the most attended in recent years.

"I will tell you that we have had more traffic in here all day long than in the three years I have been associated with Big Thursday," Cindy Simpler, GCM Executive Director, said.

Greer is driving BMW 3Q and 9-month sales reports
NOV 3, 2015

BMW reported it has sold more than 300,000 Greer-manufactured vehicles and has helped push brand sales for the quarter and nine-month reporting periods.
 

Greer produced BMW vehicles continue to drive sales despite a 3.8 percent brand decrease in October, according to BMW.

Notable October vehicle sales increases included the X3, which increased 88.1 percent to 3,028, and the X5 increased 27.9 percent to 4,292. Both Sports Activity Vehicles are produced in Greer.
