Greer State Bank reports positive quarter

Greer Bancshares Incorporated, the parent company of Greer State Bank, Friday reported quarterly net income attributable to common shareholders of $661,000 or 27 cents per diluted common share, as compared to the prior year first quarter net income of $761,000 or $31 cents per diluted common share.

It is noted that last year’s net income included gains on the sale of securities totaling $247,000.

Drivers take new merge from I-85 North to I-385 North

Upstate drivers will be taking a new route when merging from I-85 North to I-385 North by early this week.

Weather permitting, a temporary ramp was expected to be completed over the weekend that will shift driving lanes for the next nine months as crews work on the new interchange for the 85-385 Gateway Project. This $231 million project is the second largest undertaking in South Carolina Department of Transportation history.

Dillon being studied for second inland port

The South Carolina Ports Authority announced plans to pursue a second inland port facility, driven by the success of Inland Port Greer and demand for enhanced efficiency of international container movements between the Port of Charleston and growing markets in South Carolina and North Carolina. 

"While our discussions are preliminary, the success of Inland Port Greer demonstrates the market demand for additional intermodal hubs to support growing volumes of cargo moving to and from Charleston by rail," SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome said. The announcement was made the inland port.

What started out as a recreational brouhaha three years ago is ending in a peace signing, of sorts, between Greenville County and six municipalities.

Greer City Council, on Tuesday night, approved (3-1) to authorize City Administrator Ed Driggers to enter into discussion with Greenville County on an intergovernmental agreement for recreational funding.
